Ria Formosa nature reserve
This lagoon landscape stretches along the Eastern Algarve coast from Faro to the village of Cacela Velha near Tavira. Created in 1755 by the last great oceanic earthquake, its sand dunes, islands and bars to the open sea are continously shaped by tidal changes. Many archeological sites show the remains of Roman and Pre-Roman settlements.

Fuseta
FuzetaFuzeta has two beaches for you to choose from. The first is a small beach on the lagoon in the town itself. This Fuzeta beach is very busy in the morning and late afternoon in August, but calm outside of this. When the tide is up it is great to swim. When the tide is down, you can go paddling and exploring the shore. Families with toddlers will love the lagoon it is wave free and very safe.

Fuzeta’s other beach is just across the lagoon on Ilha de Armona. At high tide, you can swim here with no problems and on the lagoon side you will not be hit by waves. However, the ‘real’ Fuzeta beach is the ocean side. Close to the landing pier, The beach extends left and right for miles, so those seeking some more peace and privacy can walk for five, ten, twenty minutes or more and find as much beach to themselves as they like. Walking left, it is about a twenty minute to half an hour walk (depending on how many shells you pick on the way) to the tip of the island, the ‘barra de Fuzeta’. This is a dream beach landscape and well worth the trip for beach connoisseurs.

Moncarapacho

Moncarapacho is a small country town in the middle of an area which is home to orange orchards and horticulture. It exudes a calm, unhurried atmosphere of people going about their business in a relaxed and friendly way. The ‘centre’ of Moncarapacho is a charming cobbled square alongside the church where you can sit and have a drink or a meal beneath the jacoranda and palm trees or though you may be made to jump by the church clock striking! The town offers all the basic facilities, including three good small supermarkets and a small local produce market. There are also several decent restaurants and plenty of pavement cafés. It has its own museum and a pink, arabic-style police station. Moncarapacho has a market on the first Saturday of each month. For four days in the summer it comes alive with a big agricultural market, complete with local cuisine, dancing and music, and everything for sale from baskets to tractors and in February for the ‘carnival’ which is really very good and is locally quite famous. Outside the town are the hills of Cerro de Cabeça and São Miguel, two wild areas in which you can walk and enjoy spectacular views of the Eastern Algarve coast. There is also a good ceramic factory shop on the edge of the town which is locally noteworthy.
